Tartine Manufactory

Los Angeles

A multi-headed dragon of a project was tamed through consistent detailing and elevated by embedded narrative. Anand was the Series Designer of the Manufactory LA over the course of 3 years - during which time Anand received his license, accepted an Associate position with the firm, and became lead architect of this project during the Principal’s transition. It was a lot of learning which meant a lot of team work and understanding. The concept is built on the trust between food makers from different genres, sharing values space and aspiring to scale-up artisanal food production. This place has it all: a fine dining room, a casual restaurant, a boutique marketplace, an ice creamery, a feature bakery, a coffee roastery, a flour mill, and an entire basement ecosystem of shared resources. Custom furniture was designed by Anand and his team, implemented locally and paired with artfully curated pieces from around the country.

This is also an iconic adaptive reuse example, where an original refrigerated storage building-turned-American Apparel factory becomes a gourmet production and dining site and anchor to adjacent developments at The ROW.

Performed while Associate Architect at Studio BBA, PKA Boor Bridges Architecture.

Tartine Berkeley

While putting the finishing touches on the massive Tartine Manufactory LA, Anand led the design of Tartine Berkeley and approached the project as the space and time for recovery. The project repositions a former conference room - decades ago it was a cute florist - at the base of an iconic historic hotel. The space always wanted to be a sunroom, which became a natural inspiration that drove the project. The result is a strategic design to meet strict ADA requirements and unique mechanical codes, and creates a sunroom bakery filled with terracotta, butcherblock, beadboard and zinc.
